The Language of the Angels

The enochian calls were written in a strange idiom. Some linguists attempted to proof that this language is an artificial construct by John Dee or Edward Kelley. They failed and so the mystery of the enochian language still remains unresolved. It is much more possible that it is a real language of unknown origin and age.

If you did not have any contact with enochian angel-magic you may think of the rather weird name of the complete magic system. According to the angels that spoke during the sessions, the language that appears throughout the enochian calls is the one that was used by the angels that transferred Enoch into heaven. The name of the language and the whole system was named after Enoch. The other language that was used in the Liber Loagaeth is the language Adam had spoken, before they were expelled from paradise. There is also the interesting information that Choronzon should be responsible for that incident - because this name is the true name of the devil. However, this bit of information is quite illuminating, because Choronzon is residing in the tenth Æthyr ZAX and is the creator and destroyer of form, being the materializing moment of our physical universe we live in! When Adam was expelled from paradise and the time began, he was not able to speak at all - because he no longer was able to speak the angelic language. Pure necessity forced him to develop the first language, which can be spoken by humans. It is being called the original hebraic, which only had the division of three, seven and twelve letters in common with the hebrew we know today. This language could not emanate the power the angelic language has. Throughout his life John Dee was fascinated by the lost book of Enoch. It is quite possible that he possessed an ethiopian version of it, which he could not read, of course. Taking the mythological origins for granted in one way or the other, the angelic language is quite old.

There is an concret reason why the book of Enoch is considered apocryph. It describes events that took place before the great flood - events that were the reason for the flood itself. A group of angels, led by Shemyaza, decided to come down to earth and to take human wifes, having sex with them. They had their pleasure and taught forbidden knowledge to the common people, too. The hybrid offspring of such unions between angel and human are called Nephillim. Compared to the tribal hebrew people they were giants. They were uncontrollable and did much damage to the creation. So God punished the angels and Shemyaza. In the book of Enoch, the prophet describes his first ascension into heaven. He also give us an account on the angel's fate. At the end of his life, Enoch was finally translated into heaven and became Metatron, an important angel. He learned the language of the angels and thus the language the angels used in the calls, was being called "enochian".

However, behind all mythical and biblical images Enoch's account evokes, there are some hints on real historical events hidden in them which point to an ancient culture, now lost in the mist of time. In the section on angels I put together some interesting informations on that. All the descriptions in the apocryphs and the old testament can be interpreted in such way that the location of the paradise and the angels themselves were not incorporeal beings or places but traces and memories of a rather advanced culture, compared to the hebrew tribes from which the books are handed down to us. It would be rather far-fetched to asume a highly developed culture grounded on biblical texts only. But the total of archaeological evidence and ancient texts speak a clear language about this culture. The zenith of this culture reaches far back to the remote times of the declining of the last ice-age. The survivors of this catastrophic time still had a strong influence on the development of human civilizations. Traces of this culture you can find not only in the biblical books, but also in the Avesta, the Veda, the chinese myths and the hieroglyphic texts in middle-egyptian language and their masterpieces of architecture. Here is neither the place nor it is within the scope of my website to list all informations and evidences. If you want to know more on this I recommend two excellent authors, who published some books on the subject: Andrew Collins and Graham Hancock. It is a rather interesting idea to think of the enochian language as the language that propably was spoken in that times by members of this culture.

The magical meaning of the angels' descriptions is making sense, too. The language of the angels is using the very essence of being. The non-coporeal root of the angelic language is made clear by the information that it was being spoken by Adam, as long as he lived in paradise, the Garden Eden. Beyond the physical time-space illusion there exists no time. As soon as you enter an incarnated existence in the physical universe, you are at first not capable of speaking this language anymore because you are subject of the physical laws in this universe. Because we are talking of an angelic language, we have to realize that angels usually do not possess a physical body, thus the angelic way of transmitting information must be fundamentally different to the common way of human interaction via language. Angels are not subject to physical laws. Robert Monroe coined the term nonverbal communication to describe how non-corporeal beings communicate with each other. It consists of images, emotions, thought-patterns and -packages, as well as chains of association. A physical spoken language needs a timeflow to be spoken and be comprehended by the recipient - the nonverbal communication on the contrary does not need anything like this. So the angelic language, the angels utilized in the enochian calls, cannot be the angelic language, but only one kind of it, transformed into a linear timeflow. So it is of high importance that you actually evoke these images, emotions or thought-patterns during uttering the angelic language, called "enochian".

Today we know two versions of enochian angelic language. The enochian used in the aforementioned Liber Loagaeth and the enochian utilized in the nineteen enochian calls. Both languages share many common things, but they are also quite different in vocabulary and speech melody. The angelic language of the calls is much better documented and understood, because the calls were translated into english by the angels. So the vocabulary could be translated and even some grammatical structures could be extracted. Laycock believes that the enochian language has no similarities to semitic or arabic languages and thinks that it is more anglophonic in its structures. The enochian language possesses many features that are in no way akin to the english language, so this line of thought leads into a dead end. I am sharing the opinion of Geoffrey James on this matter. So it can be stated that the enochian language is a previously unknown language, that is moreover transmitted via magical and spiritistic means.

There is no really useful analysis available on the enochian numbers until today. None of the authors has taken into account that the calls are spoken words and it is by no means taken for granted that the combination of letters that represent the few numbers in the enochian calls are digits or much more propably the names of the numbers. I can illustrate this idea quite easily: The words "one", "two" and "eleven" are being used to name the numbers "1", "2" and "11" - which is quite common knowledge to anyone who speaks english, I suppose. But between the words "one" and "eleven" there are no mathematical relations at hand, only a semantic one. The words, that are being used to name the numbers in the enochian calls, do not offer us any relation to the actual digits of the angelic counting system. It is my opinion that the names of the enochian numbers are standing for themselves. Skinner mentioned that the digits of the enochian language are L - U - D - S - O - N - B - P - M, starting with "L" for "1". "Lud Son" - the son of Lud, John Dee had special interests in. However, I see this idea with a sceptic gaze.

There are two ways of pronouncing the angelic language. The way the Golden Dawn used is the more common known one, but it is also more cumbersome. Each enochian consonant that is not followed by a vocal borrows the vocal of the hebrew name of the correspoding letter. For example the enochian letter "b" would sound like "be" because the corresponding hebrew letter for "b" is named "beth" in hebrew language, the enochian letter "n" would sound like "nu" because "nun" is the hebrew name for the letter "n". So Wynn Westcott of the Golden Dawn pronounced "OOMDI" like this: "Oh-Oh-Meh-Dah-Ih", the enochian "vabzir" would sound like "Vau-Aah-Beh-Zod-Iih-Reh" - the enochian "z" is always pronounced as "zod". Aleister Crowleys way of pronounciation was published in the Equinox, the periodical of his magic order. Crowley even recorded the first two enochian calls. The Golden Dawn version of the first enochian call I show you here:

Ol sonuf vaoresaji, gohu IAD Balata, elanusaha caelazod: sobrazod-ol Roray i ta nazodapesad, Giraa to maelpereji, das hoel-qo qaa notahoa zodimezod, od comemahe ta nobeloha zodien; soba tahil ginonupe pereje aladi, das vaurebes obolehe giresam. Casarem ohorela caba Pire: das zodonurenusagi cab: erem Iadanahe. Pilahe farezodem zodenurezoda adana gono Iadapiel das home-tohe: soba ipame lu ipamis: das sobolo vepe zodomeda poamal, od bogira aai ta piape Piamoel od Vaoan! Zodacare, eca, od zodameranu! odo cicale Qaa; zodoreje, lape zodiredo Noco Mada, Hoathahe IAIDA!

John Dee's way of pronounciation is quite different from the Golden Dawn's rather complicated one. Dee spoke the enochian language with an english accent, although we do not know today, how this english sounds in his time. The only one human, who actually heard enochian language was Edward Kelley, who also uttered it during the sessions. Laycock reconstructed the pronounciation-rules and condensed them into this table of reference:

A - long (stressed) like in lahm, short and unaccented like in Paste
B - unchanged, silent when between an m and another consonant, or after an m as ending consonant.
C - as k before a,o,u; as s before i,e (with many exceptions) and in clusters: noncf = nonsf
CH - as k in almost all positions, but as ch at the end
D - unchanged d in all positions
E - like the long eee (accented), (unaccented) like the english bed
F, PH - unchanged f
G - hard g in front of a,o,u; as j before i,e in endings, after d and in clusters
H - like h. Silent after a vocal, prolonging it
I, Y - stressed like a long ii, unaccented like the english bit, in combinations like "ai", "ei" or "oi". As y when at the beginning of a word.
K, L, M, N - unchanged in all positions
O - accented like the french mot, unaccented like the english not, in combinations "oi", "ou" or "oo" like fool
P - unchanged in all positions except PH
Q - like kw, but the word q is pronounced as "qwa".
R - like the english r, can be rolled, too.
S - voiceless s. At some places it can be voiced where it fits best in english.
SH - voiceless sch like "Schiff"
T - unchanged t
TH - english þ
U - either a long u or short u, at the beginning of a word "ju", as v or w in front of other vocals and at the end of a word.
X - as our well-known x
Z - voiced s like the english zoo, at some rare places like "zod".

I myself try to stay to the letters as best as possible. On this way I discovered that even the wildest clusters are pronouncable. Sometimes I borrow some rules from Dee's pronounciations, but only at some rare places. The speech melody is extremely flexible, depending on the pronounciation-rules you are utilizing.
