Until a shaman can appear the soul of that person which is about to become a shaman is carried away by evil spirits and raised till it has assumed the abilities of one evil spirit. During the absence of the soul the man is seriously ill  (so the illness of the shaman is a sign that his soul is being educated by evil spirits. G.K.). As soon as he is well up again he can begin to shamanize. In one case the soul is transformed into a bird, in another case it is transformed in cattle and in the last case in a human.

It is said there exists a tree with many tops. All shamans from the world are born there. The greater the shaman will be, regarding his powers and influence, the higher is his soul being brooded. The souls can be found on different places there on the tree. The shamans tell that a raven appears during the time of raising.

The tiermutter of a great shaman appears as an elk. That of a lesser shaman as a reindeer. She appears at the shamans death to carry away his cervical vertebra with her teeth.

It is said that a shaman has a special ability of seeing. He could see in all directions at once. This ability is being called "Fire of the eyes" and its influence ranges further if utilized by greater shamans then by lesser shamans.
